How To Clean Mould Around The House?

Mould is something that almost every homeowner or business has encountered at some point. It could be on food that's been left too long or on the wall in a damp or dark area.

However, certain moulds are much more dangerous than others. You may forget about food in a tupperware for a week or two if you put it in the back of the fridge. On other occasions, if you find a substantial amount of black mould on your ceiling or walls, you have a much more serious issue.

In this post, we'll go over the basics of mould, including what it is, where it likes to grow, and how it should be removed and cleaned up if it's discovered. Keep reading to find out what you can do to ensure the health and safety of your family at home.

What is Mould?

Mould is something that most people will come into contact with at some point, but let's take a step back and define just what it is.

A closer look at mould under a microscope reveals its true structure, despite its many disguises throughout the house. In common with other fungi, moulds have a single, massive, linked network of microscopically thin threads called mycelium. These filaments branch off into smaller branches (hyphae) that end in spore bundles.

These spores have a jelly-like casing (which explains why mould is typically sticky to the touch) and are discharged for two reasons. The first is reproductive, as the fungi spread their mycelium by adhering to clean surfaces. Mould relies on the enzymes the spores produced to break down organic matter, which serves as food.

The Issue it Poses for Your House and Family

Mould serves as nature's "clean up crew," breaking down decaying organic debris, and deserves our gratitude and respect. But there are two main reasons why you shouldn't intentionally encourage mould growth anywhere in your house.

To begin, breathing it in directly contributes to a wide range of respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Second, mould, especially the dreaded black mould, can be detrimental to buildings since it thrives on cellulose-rich materials like those used in construction (plasterboard, carpet, wallpaper, etc.).

Mould Removal

There are some easy things you can do to reduce the likelihood of mould growing in your house. Mould may quickly spread, so it's important to keep an eye out for it and to wipe it up as soon as possible with bleach or antifungal cleaning agents if you ever find any.

If you find that a certain region is prone to persistent mould growth, it's best to investigate the possibility of a water leak or find a means to eliminate extra moisture from that spot.

If you are a resident of Sydney’s North Shore area, you would already know that the leafy areas could be a breeding ground for mould, especially when it rains frequently like what we experienced in the last 12 months.

Hand scrubbing with some bleach won't do the trick when you see massive outbreaks of black mould on the exterior of your property. This is where a good soft house washing comes in.

Pressure Washing vs House Washing

Although the two are comparable, there are significant differences between soft washing and pressure washing. Since pressure washing relies solely on the high pressure stream of water to cut away mould patch, mildew, and algae, it is best utilised on hard surfaces like pathways or driveways.

Instead, soft washing employs pressurised water combined with specific chemicals to remove algae and mould growth at a considerably lower pressure level. The only way to completely eradicate mould and mildew spores from the exterior of your home is with this house washing method.

There are a number of advantages to soft washing your home in a humid area. Having a clean exterior is nice to look at, but a soft wash is also great for getting rid of mould.

It doesn't take much for mould spores to get into your home and start multiplying, which poses health hazards and could eventually cause structural damage if left unchecked.
